Students choose their model based on their experience, personal interests, and with guidance from their instructor. The goal is to select a model that offers a balanced challenge—one that encourages learning new techniques and aspects of the artistic process, while still being achievable within a reasonable timeframe. The instructor will help students make a choice that aligns with their skill level and artistic goals, ensuring both growth and satisfaction in their work.
We do not operate on a set semester or term schedule. Instead, we typically book classes in advance for a block of four sessions, with each session lasting a minimum of one hour.
Jey primarily works with nature and portraiture, using a variety of mediums like oil, acrylic, pastel, and watercolor. The style is a blend of realism, focusing on detailed, lifelike depictions, and impressionism, which captures the mood and essence of a scene with loose brushwork and vibrant color. This combination allows Jey to create works that balance technical precision with emotional depth.
In our drawing classes, students begin with foundational techniques like sketching, shading, and perspective. We focus on building skills in proportion, composition, and capturing light and shadow to create both realistic and expressive drawings. Students explore various mediums such as graphite, charcoal, and ink, with a focus on still life and figure drawing
In our acrylic and oil painting classes, students learn the basics of working with these versatile paints, from color mixing to layering techniques. We cover methods such as glazing, impasto, and dry brushing, helping students achieve depth, texture, and vibrancy in their work. Both acrylic and oil classes emphasize composition, brushwork, and the principles of light and color. Students are encouraged to experiment with different styles, from realism to abstraction, while developing their own creative voice.
If you need to cancel a group class, please provide at least 12 hours’ notice. Your payment for the canceled session will be credited toward a make-up class or applied to your next classes, based on availability. However, if you do not show up without giving 12 hours’ notice, we will need to charge for the missed session.
There is ample street parking available around Jey Art Studio. During busier times, please allow some extra time to find a spot. The studio is easily accessible from Lonsdale Avenue and nearby side streets.
Parents or assigned adults are required to drop off and pick up children. For older children with consent, they may leave on their own. We request that parents minimize their time in the studio during drop-off and pick-up to ensure smooth transitions.
In our art classes, students dive into a model-based, hands-on learning experience, focusing on essential drawing and painting techniques like shadowing, circumferential lines, blending, fading, and light and color. We minimize time spent on theories and rigid structures; instead, students choose their own models to work from with the help of their instructor, fostering personal investment and creativity as they develop skills through practical application and guided supervision.
We require at least 12 hours’ notice for cancellations or rescheduling. Classes canceled without sufficient notice will be forfeited. Please contact us directly for any changes or requests.
With younger children, we focus on model-based learning, but with simplified models that are age-appropriate. We encourage them to express their creativity while maintaining the basic structure of the model. The goal is to build foundational skills and confidence, while allowing them the freedom to add their own unique touch to their artwork
We accept payments via credit card, debit card, cash and e transfer. Payment is required to confirm your spot in the class.
For our drawing and painting classes, students will need basic art supplies, including pencils, erasers, sketchbooks, and appropriate materials for the chosen medium (acrylic or oil paints, brushes, palettes, etc.). The exact supplies required may vary depending on the class and age group. We recommend contacting Jey Art Studio for specific details about the materials needed for your class to ensure you have the right items.
